Being a hot topic in America, the environmentalism movement has gained momentum over the past 40 years, and one scientist thinks the radical belief in saving the planet stems from secular humanism.

Dr. Jason Lisle, speaker and researcher for the apologetics ministry Answers in Genesis (AIG), believes secular humanism, among other beliefs, is a rising ideal that competes with Christianity in the nation.

"The main competitor at this time is the view that human beings — independent of God — determine truth, morality, meaning and purpose in life," Lisle suggests. "We should consider the fact that human beings were created to worship God. When they reject God, their need to worship remains. They tend to worship what God has created rather than God himself."

He feels that America's new trend is a belief where the concern is not God, but that it is spirituality and humanity's relationship with nature. He adds that secular humanism leads to an elevated view of the earth and creation instead of its creator.

"They tend to have an extreme view, which we might call 'hyper-environmentalism,' in which the earth is elevated to almost a god-like status," Lisle explains. "Many hyper-environmentalists are secular humanists, who see religion in general (and the Christian religion specifically) as detrimental to humanity."

I think the reason that people from all different calls and creeds come together for the environment is that it is the one thing we all have in common to find a certain peace from. I don't know any cultures that don't have a reverence for a beautiful sunset or the ocean or for baby animals… we love these things and can see a higher being through them. Even an agnostic would attest that no mere man can create something so extravagent as the natural world.

I wouldn't call this new "go green" trend a religion, though. If someone chooses to make it their life or reason for existence, thats a personal decision but I don't think the majority of people in the green movement are worshiping the earth as a god. I think people just want to play a part in conserving something beautiful and important to them.
